SALT LAKE CITY
I realize that the states and cities in the north have to repair their roads in the little time available to them in the summer months. However, today was over-the-top. It seemed that every hour or so we were herded through or around construction - or worse, brought to a standstill.
For the first 60 - 100 mils we followed the snake river through river valleys and mountain passes. Beauty on a more human scale than the majesty of the mountains of the past week or so.
The towns and cities were passed in Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah were each fun and interesting. Some were small farming towns, some part tourist and part farming. The whole area we drove is sportsman's paradise. Fishing, hunting, hiking, and skiing are possible everywhere. The ones of Aston (great chocolate shop) and Bear Lake are two that we stopped in.
Finally, we arrived at Salt Lake City. A big, sprawling city revivified with the 2002 Olympics. Since that time, the downtown has begun to decay visibly with large numbers of stores vacant. The Temple grounds are as we both remembered them. The hotel we are in was built especially for the Olympics and, in this season, fairly empty. No complaints
