BANFF NATIONAL PARK

We started the morning reading on our balcony in Calgary. The day was to be pretty leisurely in the sense that we were not hurtling from one city to the next but just going to Banff National Park (BNP).

For the past couple of days, except for Calgary itself, there has been almost no traffic on the road. By the time we got to BNP we joined a parade of park-goers. At the ticket counter we stopped to pay the entrance fee. Both in America and in Canada senior citizens get a discount. The nice young thing that sold us the ticket announced; "one adult and one senior". It is fun to have progressed to a new age category.

The mountains have the majesty everyone has attributed to them forever. The trees on the mountains are 50 to 100 feet high but they look like grass, as we perceive them.

Banff (the city not the Park) is a surprising tourist town. It was mobbed. The stores sell everything from souvenirs to ----. We actually ended up eating in a food court in a local mall. Not expected in the environment. No matter how many pictures there are of the area it is still more. The picture, although it is of the scenery in general, centers on a "hoodoo", a rock formation that has various religious and interpretive significance.

Lake Louise is very special.
